So, you’ve decided to do some remodeling of your home – whether it be replacing your floors, redoing your kitchen, or some other HGTV-esque project.
You have exciting ideas in your head that you cannot wait to turn into reality. You can envision what each area of your new space will look like. But one thing stops you in your tracks…
What do you do first?
Of course, if you just need or want a small touch-up or remodel of one area of your home, it’s not as much of a problem.
But if you have multiple things you want accomplished in this remodel, which do you handle first? And how do you know what order to go in?
Whether this is your first or fifth remodel, the remodeling process can still be a bit hazy. That’s why we’re here to provide our expert-advice and hopefully shed some light on your situation!
What’s the Right Way?
The truth is, there is no one right way. There is not just one solution.
Every remodel is going to be largely based on customer needs and preferences. And honestly, every home renovation professional also has their own opinions.
While we know that may be freeing to some, we also know that can bring even more stress to those who just want to know what order to do things in. If the latter is you, we have compiled some of our biggest tips we’ve gathered over the years of doing floor installations, kitchen remodels, and bathroom remodels.
Realistic Expectations
Before we get into specific remodeling tips, an important reminder is to have realistic expectations on the remodeling process. When you begin a remodel, there may be unforeseen issues that arise and need to be taken care of. This could possibly mean more time or money is required.
And while we all might wish remodels would happen like they do in 1-hour TV shows, unfortunately, that’s just not the reality.
This doesn’t mean you should become discouraged about your own remodel. It just means remodels in real life take a bit more time. It’s a good reminder to be open-minded and realistic when going into your own remodeling process.
Timeline is Important
One of the most important things to have a realistic view on is the timeline. The timeline is important because it sets the tone and schedule for the whole process. You want to see if your timeline makes sense for the project and keeps things flowing. This will ensure there is no wasted time in between parts of the remodel.
While the timeline is the most important element to a remodel, it can change as progress is made. So, remember to have a realistic estimated finishing date and timeline before the process even begins between you and whoever you hired to do your remodel.
Quick Jobs First
Going along with the timeline, our biggest tip is to get the quick things done first before starting more time-consuming projects. So, smaller tasks should generally be completed before bigger remodeling projects such as cabinets, flooring, and entire remodeling projects.
The reason is these quicker jobs generally take less time. Therefore, more can be done in the same time it would take to complete one more time-consuming project.
Plus, if your more time-consuming projects do get delayed or stretched out longer than intended, it isn’t delaying some of the smaller things you could be doing.
Kitchen Remodel
Lastly, if you are aiming to do a kitchen remodel, here are our tips for that specific process.
First and foremost, cabinets always go first — they are the foundation for your kitchen. Cabinets set the timeline for everything else that needs to be done in the space.
Once your new cabinets are installed, you are able to move on to counter tops, backsplash, and flooring. Finally, paint and/or stain will go last to finish off your kitchen remodel.
While there is no one correct way, we hope that some of these tips helped you get a good start on all things remodeling.
It’s important to find professionals that understand that remodeling is custom and should be largely based on your needs as the customer – not just what they want.
